January 2026

This month, children participated in a wide range of hands-on learning experiences designed to support curiosity, exploration, and skill development across all areas.

In science and sensory exploration, children used the light table with magnets to observe how colors change when layered and how magnets attract or repel metal. They explored cause and effect by mixing colors using paint, watercolor, yogurt with food

coloring, colored rice, snow, ice, and pasta. Children also experimented with baking soda and droppers to observe reactions and color changes, strengthening early scientific thinking.

Language and early literacy were supported through daily interactions with letters and books. Children worked with ABC puzzles to sort, match, and name letters, practiced pre-writing skills using pencils, markers, sand, and rice, and listened to stories in both English and Spanish. We read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and Marisol McDonald Doesn’t Match, encouraging vocabulary development, storytelling, and self-expression. Our focus letters were E (January) and A (February).

In math and cognitive development, children practiced sorting and classifying materials by color and shape using pom-poms, buttons, balls, and natural materials. They explored basic geometry with a focus on the circle and triangle, and developed number awareness through activities centered on the number 2.

Physical development was supported through daily movement experiences. Children crawled through tunnels with balls, played soccer, practiced throwing and catching, followed colored tape paths on the floor to improve balance, and participated in music and movement activities. Outdoor walks provided opportunities to explore the environment and build endurance.

Creative expression and fine motor skills were encouraged through block building, painting with brushes and natural materials, creating art with rice and watercolor, working with homemade playdough and natural elements, and making musical instruments using kitchen materials. These experiences allowed children to express ideas, strengthen hand muscles, and engage in collaborative play.
